At the discharge meeting, Patrick’s new foster mother sits at a conference table. Patrick is brought into the room -- a large, imposing, 16-year-old young man. The first thing he does is move to his new mom’s side and gently clasp her hand in a gesture reminiscent of a young child.

Over the ensuing months, Patrick flourishes in his new home. His behavior is exemplary; he relates well with his foster siblings and feels he is an integral part of the family. He has developed a healthier relationship to food as well, slimming down to 270 lbs. His altercations at school have decreased markedly, and though he still struggles academically, he is cooperating with his school program.

Patrick’s progress is so significant, in fact, that both he and his foster family decide to pursue adoption.
It has taken seventeen years, but Patrick now has a permanent family.
