Orientation and training ensure that youth and mentors share a common
understanding of the adult’s role, and help mentors develop
realistic expectations of what they can accomplish.
Training equips volunteers with the information and strategies they
need to maximize their chances of developing mutually satisfying
relationships with youth.
Supervision of the matches helps the pairs negotiate the inevitable
bumps in the relationship. Ongoing support—either from professional
staff or from mentor support groups—helps mentors keep meeting
with youth and work through the rough spots.
