Rewards of mentoring

Volunteers for mentorship must be at least 21 years old.

To apply:

1. Contact the volunteer coordinator at 847-245-6483 or volunteer@allendale4kids.org.

2. Complete the volunteer application form and meet with the volunteer coordinator for a tour of the Allendale campus and an interview.

3. Complete the Department of Children and Family Services application, which includes being fingerprinted for a background check, receiving a physical exam and TB test (paid for by Allendale), and providing references and proof of a driver’s license and insurance.

4. Meet with the volunteer coordinator for orientation and training. The volunteer coordinator will consult with Allendale staff to match you with a resident, taking into account your preferences, interests, and personality. The matching process may take up to six weeks.

5. Meet with the volunteer coordinator, the child’s case specialist, and the child’s therapist for an initial consultation before the first visit with the PAL.

6. Conduct the first three visits with staff supervision on campus. Off-campus activities are allowed after this, if the PAL, the child and staff are comfortable.

7. Maintain contact with the case specialist, the child’s therapist, and the volunteer coordinator to discuss the PAL’s progress and document volunteer time.

8. If you would like your PAL to visit at your home, the volunteer coordinator will conduct a home study.
